Description
Introducing the Tibetan Citipati (or Kipa) Metal Frame, a traditional piece of Himalayan repoussé art representing the Dancing Skeleton known as the protector deities in Vajrayana Buddhism. The Citipati are known as the “Lords of the Charnel Ground,” often depicted as a dancing pair of skeletons.
This unique Tibetan art piece (Citipati Metal Frame) features:
1. The Citipati Figures (Central Motif)
Skeleton Forms: The central focus of this metal frame consists of two skeletal figures carved in high relief. Despite their macabre appearance, they are shown in a dynamic, joyous dance pose which symbolizes the liberation from worldly attachment and the cycle of death and rebirth.
2. Decorative Metalwork & Frame
The Aureole (Prabhamandala): The dancing skeletons are encircled by a deep red, flame-like arch. This represents the “fire of wisdom” in Buddhism that consumes ignorance.
Lotus Border: The inner frame has been decorated with a vibrant lotus petal border in alternating shades of pink, blue, and gold. In Himalayan art, the lotus signifies spiritual purity and the foundation of divine presence.
Geometric Patterns: The outermost edge of the frame features a silver-toned, repetitive geometric key pattern (often called the Meander or Infinite Knot style), symbolizing eternal flow and protection.
3. Material and Coloring
White Metal Repoussé: This masterpiece has been crafted using the repoussé and chasing technique, where the white metal is hammered from the back to create a 3D effect.
Vibrant Enameling/Painting: Unlike plain metal pieces, this frame has been heavily accented with colors, vivid greens, reds, blues, and golds, that give it the appearance of a “Thangka in metal.”
Textured Background: The area behind the skeletons has a finely stippled or “dotted” texture, which creates a shimmering effect that makes the central figures pop.
4. Traditional Hangings
Ritual Tassels: The frame has been adorned with colorful textile tassels on the left and right sides.
Beaded Accents: Small colorful beads connect the tassels to the metal frame, adding a tactile, folk-art element to the sophisticated metalwork.
Symbolic Meaning
While the imagery of skeletons might seem grim, in this cultural context, it is a positive symbol. It serves as a reminder of impermanence (Anitya) and the importance of practicing mindfulness and joy in the present moment, rather than fearing the end of life.
